  • A specialist K2 paddler, Stephen Bird and teammate Jesse Phillips won their third consecutive National Title in the K2 200m at the 2012 National Championships. The West Australian duo secured the title in a re-race after the starter declared the first run a 'No Race' following a faulty start.
  • Phillips and Bird also took the K2 200m crown at the 2012 Oceania Championships, meaning the pair earned their first Olympic campaign berth. The win, just 0.24 seconds ahead of Queensland duo Matthew Urquhart and Joel Simpson was one of the most exciting finishes of the Championships.
  • The pair of Phillips and Bird combined to reach three World Cup finals in Poland in 2011 and also placed 14th in the K2 200m at the 2011 World Championships in Hungary.
  • Born in Pietermaritzburg South Africa, Bird was a talented all-round sportsman - selected for regional team representation as a teenager in swimming, water polo, crickt, tennis, athletics, rugby, hockey and cross country.
