  • Belinda Stowell took up sailing in her native Zimbabwe after she was handed down a boat at the age of 4 and got hooked as she enjoyed watching the hippos and elephants on the shoreline while competing in regattas.
  • After migrating to Australia in 1991 to go to university.,Stowell recognised the professionalism of the sport in her new home and realised that she could pursue a career in the sport.
  • Stowell's potential in the sport was reached when she and her partner Jenny Armstrong won gold in the 470 class at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. She was given the Order of Australia Medal as a result and went on to take out the Australian Female Sailor of the Year award in 2000 and 2001.
  • Stowell placed 14th at the 2004 Athens Olympics and afterwards made the decision to give up competitive sailing. Seven years later, shel made a remarkable return to the water in 2011 with Beijing gold medallist Tessa Parkinson. After some indifferent results, Parkinson encouraged Stowell to compete with 2008 partner Elise Reichichi. The new pairing impressed after only a few weeks together to secure Australia's 470 Olympic quota spot at the 2011 World Championships.
  • Stowell sailed on a Whitbread 60 with an all girls Australian based team skippered by Adrienne Cahalan in 1996. They sailed 17000 nautical miles from London to New Zealand via Cape Town.
