- Kobie McGurk suffered a serious injury that almost ruled her out of contention for the Beijing Olympic Games. Determined to become an Olympian, the fearless defender recovered in time to secure selection and was influential in the Hockeyroos' Olympic campaign where they finished fifth.
- One of the veterans of the team, McGurk has played over 100 international caps and has represented Australia in four Champions Trophy campaigns. In 2006 McGurk was a key member of the Commonwealth Games team that won gold, but a stress fracture in her foot stopped her from helping defend the Commonwealth title in 2010.
- McGurk's 2010 stress fractures kept her off the pitch for months and she faced a familiar fitness test to return to form having also suffered a serious knee injury in 2009. Rejuvinated, the Western Australian who debuted for the Hockeyroos in 2005 at the age of 18, set her sights firmly on the Olympics and played in all major 2011 tournaments.
- Following her injury new Hockeyroos coach Adam Commens shifted McGurk to the midfield in a bid to utilise her speed, agility and aerobic ability to drive and release her strikers on goals.
- Outside hockey, McGurk loves cooking and often fishes with her dad off the beach. She also has an obsession with finding the best coffee wherever she travels.
