The Western Australian 21/U squad has recorded two wins at the National Championships in Tasmania as the round robin stage nears completion.

WA today accounted for hosts Tasmania with a 53-35 scoreline, having earlier in the day succumbed to a 10 goal defeat at the hands of Queensland (44-54).

WAIS shooting combination, Sophie Garbin and Kim Shepherd contributed 36 and 11 goals respectively in their win over Tasmania, whilst a second half fade cost the WA outfit a chance of victory against Queensland, following a tight first half.

Western Australian, led Victoria in the opening match of the 21/U carnival at the half-time break, before relinquishing control, for a 41-54 defeat. WA were quick out of the blocks to race to a seven goal lead at the main break, but an 18 goal to seven reverse in the third term, changed the course of the match.

The girls chalked up their first win of the competition on day two, when accounting for the Australian Capital Territory, 58-31. Garbin was again sharp in this match, sinking 39 goals for the team.

NSW proved too strong for WA in their other match on day two, by virtue of a strong start, that saw the side double WA’s goal tally in the first quarter to lead by nine goals, before controlling large parts of the match for a 46-66 win.

WA will look to close out the round robin phase with a strong performance against reigning premiers South Australia on Friday, before the cross overs complete this year’s tournament.
