WAIS swimmer Alex Saffy has made a successful start to his international career, winning bronze in the S10 100m butterfly at the Para Swimming World Championships in Madeira, Portugal.

The 16-year-old was the only debutant on the Australian Team, with every member claiming a medal at the Championships.

His rapid rise in the sport over the last 12 months includes being awarded the Wally Foreman Foundation Scholarship, with the funding enabling him to spend time at the AIS in Canberra, ahead of the Championships.

Saffy claimed bronze behind Stefano Raimondi of Italy and Australian teammate Col Pearse.

“I’m stoked! That was a good swim. I’m stoked with that,” said Saffy. “Just to be on this team was a big achievement for me, to go home with a bronze medal is pretty amazing

“It is exciting. The S10 100m fly is probably the most exciting event on the program, the depth in it at the moment is pretty amazing.”
