WAIS athletics athletes on the Australian Team for the 2022 Commonwealth Games has increased to 11 with Angus Armstrong, Matt Ramsden and Declan Tingay selected.

Pole vaulter Armstrong has earned his second Commonwealth Games Team, having finished fifth on the Gold Coast four years ago.

For Matt Ramsden his selection comes following another consistent domestic and international season. After winning gold in the 5000m at the National Championships in April, he has earned selection in the 5000m and his traditional 1500m.

Declan Tingay will also make his debut at the Commonwealth Games, having represented Australia at the Tokyo Olympic Games last year. Tingay will be eyeing a medal in the 10km race walk.

They join the previously selected Nina Kennedy and Kurtis Marschall (pole vault), Rhiannon Clarke, Ella Pardy and Robyn Lambird (para 100m), Sarah Edmiston (para discus), Madison de Rozario (para distance) and Peter Bol (800m).

Commonwealth Games Australia Team Chef de Mission Petria Thomas OAM said, “This is an exciting group who are ready to be bold in gold at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

“Today’s selections are a wonderful mixture of defending gold medal champions, experienced campaigners, and the next generation who are ready to establish themselves on the world stage.

“Australia has enjoyed a tremendous legacy in athletics at the Commonwealth Games, and I know the Team Members selected today are ready to add their names to that storied history.”
