Athlete in Focus: Alex Milligan

Published On: 8 February 2018

Alex Milligan is a rising star in the world of swimming, having represented Australia at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships and the 2017 World University Games. This week we caught up with him to dive deeper into his sporting journey and to find out a little bit more about his life away from the training environment.

  • What made you want to start participating in your sport?

I swam in squads from a very young age in addition to playing water polo and going to the beach often. This helped me develop a love for water, which got me keen to swim competitively.

  • What is your favourite kind of training session and why?

Every Monday night we have a Form Threshold session which consists of 2-3km of form stroke (breaststroke for me) in the threshold range broken up into 50s, 100s and 200s. This kind of session is, to quote my coach “the meat and potatoes” of fitness and is always a consistent grind that I’ve always enjoyed.

  • What is your biggest sporting achievement to date?

Qualifying and competing for Australia in both the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii and the 2017 World University Games in Taiwan.

  • What is your ultimate sporting goal?

To compete successfully in the Olympic Games for Australia.

  • What is your favourite thing to do away from your sport?

Play video games with friends.

  • What is your biggest non-sporting achievement to date?

Studying undergraduate Engineering with assured pathway to Masters of Professional Engineering.

  • Nutrition is obviously a big part of being an athlete. What is your favourite meal to cook/eat?
  • Wholemeal pasta with lemon salmon and spinach leaves.

    • What does you weekly training schedule look like?
