Athlete in Focus: Luke Zaccaria

Published On: 21 June 2017

WAIS is home to hundreds of elite athletes all hailing from different walks of life in pursuit of different goals. This month, InsideWAIS caught up with Luke Zaccaria to gain an insight into his sporting journey to date.

Sport: Track Cycling – Sprint

When did you first start participating in your sport?

I was always a very active child. My Mum taught me how to climb out of the crib at the age of two because I was always awake as soon as the sun was up, but I started playing sports when I was four years old with the local soccer club before moving to football when I was ten. I also did little athletics before I got talent searched for sprint cycling at age 13 and I haven’t looked back since.

What is your favourite thing about your sport?

Everything! The whole journey is what makes sport great.

The places you get to travel to and experience, the friendships you make along the way, the rewards you can achieve for all the hard work and time you put into your sport. The life lessons sport teaches you that you will carry on into your whole life. All of this is why I love sport.

What is your biggest sporting achievement to date?

I don’t feel as if I’ve had a major result which is why I still train as hard as I do and continue to pursue my goals, as I feel my biggest achievement is still ahead of me.

What is your ultimate sporting goal?

Representing Australia on the international stage and to become World and Olympic Champion.

Do you work or study? What is it that you do?

I currently work in the construction industry as a concreter and as a co-facilitator for the Developing Champions program.

Do you have any other hobbies outside of your sport and work?

More sports, cooking, reading and hanging out with friends.
