WAIS Commonwealth Games bound swimmer Blair Evans has posted the fastest time in qualifying for Friday night’s 800m freestyle final at the Australian Swimming Championships in Sydney.

The reigning national champion posted a time of 8:35.20mins and will start favourite against 2006 national champion Melissa Gorman, who won the second heat with a time just .15 of a second slower than Evans.

The City of Perth swimmer will be looking to add the 800m crown to the 200m title she won earlier in the campaign after causing a major upset to book herself a position on Australia’s Commonwealth Games team, bound for New Delhi in October.

Fellow WAIS scholarship holder Kris Taylor will be in action tonight in the men’s 100m freestyle semi-final, where he will be hoping to book a spot in the blue ribband event alongside West Australian Eamon Sullivan – who was the fastest qualifier in 49.06secs.
