World Champion Brianna Throssell and Olympic medallist Tamsin Cook have helped Australia qualify fastest for the women’s 4x200m freestyle final.

Australia’s first two swimmers Mollie O’Callaghan and Meg Harris put Australia in a strong position and a dominant lead before Throssell took to the pool. Throssell’s split of 1:54.46 further extended the Australian lead to hand over to Tamsin Cook.

Five years ago in Rio, Cook put in a massive swim to deliver silver to Australia. Tonight in Tokyo, Cook was again called on to anchor the team with her 1:56.03 sealing Australia’s spot in the final as the fastest qualifiers.

The team for the final will feature four new faces. “It is something Swimming Australia has been working towards for a long time, building such depth in the sport and I think it is so exciting we can have a whole fresh team come in tomorrow morning,” said Throssell. “The four of us wanted to just get out and put together the best swims we could and get the girls lane four for tomorrow.”

Less than 10 months from her full return to the pool Cook was pleased to again be wearing the green and gold.

“I am just so honoured and privledged to be part of this team. As everyone has said there is so much depth in women’s freestyle in Australia and it is such a fight to make it and get a spot so just an honour for us to have done our jobs.”
