Dual World Champion Brianna Throssell has booked herself a ticket to a second Olympic Games, winning the 200m butterfly at the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials in 2:07.63.

The reigning national champion was quick off the block and looked in control throughout the race, with a powerful final 50 to come in under the qualifying time.

Qualification came as a relief for Throssell, who agonisingly missed qualifying on the opening day in the 100m butterfly.

“I didn’t probably have the best start to the meet, night one I missed qualifying by .01 and last night in the 200m free probably wasn’t my best race so I knew I had to come out here and just get under the qualifying time as best as I could.

“Look I’ll take it,” Throssell said of the time. “I really would have liked to gone a 2:06 as I haven’t been there in a few years but it is under qualifying time so that is all I can ask for right now.”

After the Rio Games, the now 25-year-old Throssell switched programs, joining the WAIS squad under the guidance of Head Coach Mick Palfrey. With Palfrey guiding her to two world titles and a world record at the 2019 World Championships.

“I moved coaches after Rio and it was the absolute best decision of my life and I’m so thankful to Mick [Palfrey], Leighton [Cook] and the team at WAIS.”
