Burras Claim Johor Cup Title

The Australian men’s junior hockey team have tuned up for next month’s Junior World Cup by winning the Sultan of Johor Cup for the first time after defeating Pakistan 3 -1 in the final at the Taman Daya Stadium.

The Burras were helped to victory by Western Australian pair Frazer Gerrard and Matthew Bird, with the former on the scoresheet for the Australians in the 13th minute.

The Australians were forced to overturn an early deficit, after Pakistan took the lead on seven minutes through a Hassan Anwar penalty corner strike.

Gerrard equalised through a smart penalty corner deflection before a Blake Govers double in the second half ensured the Burras would lift the Sultan Johor Cup for the first time in its history.

The WA duo now face a nervous wait to see if they are part of the Australian squad for next month’s Junior World Cup in India, which will be held in Lucknow, between December 8 – 18.
