Caitlin Parker aiming high after selection to second Commonwealth Games Team

WAIS scholarship holder Caitlin Parker is aiming high and looking to turn her silver medal from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games to gold in Birmingham.

WA boxers make up more than a third of the team with Parker joined by WAIS graduate Alex Winwood who will contest the men’s 52kg division, Billy Polkinghorn (men’s 64kg) and Charlie Senior (men’s 56kg) on the 11-athlete strong squad.

26-year-old Parker, who fights in the women’s 75kg division has her eye on brining gold home to Perth after a close contest four years ago.

“100% my aim is to upgrade the silver to gold in Birmingham! I will focus on giving the best performances possible over there and wear my green and gold uniform, loud and proud,” said the Gosnells raised Parker.

Parker who made her Olympic debut in Tokyo last year is hoping her experience will major Games experience will help in her quest for gold.

“The 2018 Commonwealth Games was one of the best experiences I’ve had in life and in the ring. It leaves me feeling incredibly grateful to be selected to represent my country for my second Commonwealth Games,” said Parker.

“I have the experience in the Gold Coast and my experience at the Olympics last year to draw from to bring my absolute best in Birmingham this year.”

Before the Birmingham Games, Parker who is the only Australian to win medals at the Junior and Youth World Championships is looking to add another medal to her name at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Turkey in May.

“I’m currently in Sheffield, UK training at the English Institute of Sport for the upcoming Women’s World Championships. I’m ready for a massive next few months, and am working on improving myself physically and mentally everyday, with a big help from WAIS,” Parker said.

“My goal is to medal at the upcoming World Championships and win a gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.”
