The Diamonds have passed their first test of the Commonwealth Games, beating Jamaica in a crucial group A match in Delhi on Thursday night.

Norma Plummer’s side came away with a 60-46 victory although the final score hides the fact that it was Jamaica who led at the first change, with Australia needing to fight back from a two goal quarter time deficit.

The Jamaicans started brightly and led 15-13 at the first break but Plummer kept the faith, with the same seven players, including WAIS athlete Susan Fuhrmann, on the court for the entire game. Her charges returned the coach’s faith by half time, turning the two goal deficit into a six goal lead.

Fuhrmann came to the fore in the third term, dominating the defensive circle, whilst at the other end Australia’s shooters piled on the goals, shooting at an impressive 91% for the match.

By the end of the match the Diamonds had built a comfortable lead and ran out 14 goal victors.

Australia next play Malawi on Friday afternoon.
