WAIS swimming athlete Blair Evans has won a maiden Commonwealth Games gold medal after swimming the second leg of Australia’s 4x200m relay team in Delhi over night.

The 200m national champion – swam an assured leg and stretched Australia’s advantage after Commonwealth champion Kylie Palmer had given the Aussies an early lead.

Evans extended the margin out to two body lengths before Bronte Barrett took over, maintaining the margin, allowing Megan Nay to cruise home for the gold medal. The Australian girls won gold in 7:53.71min.

The result was followed by jubilant scenes, with the clearly elated Evans all smiles during the medal ceremony.

The gold medal also eases the disappointment of missing out on an individual medal for Evans, after she finished sixth in the 200m freestyle earlier in the meet.

Evans however, still has a busy schedule to finish, having qualified for tonight’s final of the women’s 800m freestyle where she will face world record holder and Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington of England.

The City of Perth swimmer is also scheduled to compete in the women’s 400m individual medley, with qualifying on Saturday morning, on the last day of the swimming meet in Delhi.
