The Kookaburras, featuring WAIS athletes Trent Mitton and Fergus Kavanagh, have marched into the gold medal game at the Commonwealth Games with a thumping 6-2 win over trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand on Tuesday afternoon.

Picking up where they left off in their pool matches the Australians absorbed the early pressure from the Kiwis before counterattacking with ferocity.

The first 24 minutes were scoreless with chances at both ends on offer, before Simon Orchard set the Kookaburras on their way with the opener.

Orchard’s goal resulted in a stunning finish to the first half, with Ric Charlesworth’s men adding two more goals to essentially seal the match with a 3-0 half time scoreline.

A Des Abbott effort not long into the second half continued the green and gold march, taking the score to 4-0 before New Zealand fought back with two goals of their own.

4-2 was as close as it got however, with late goals to Glenn Turner and Orchard securing a 6-2 victory to Australia.

The gold medal match will be played at 2pm on Thursday.
