Front of the line: Meyer grafts for his team at the coal face of the peloton

WAIS-AIS cyclists Cameron Meyer and Luke Durbridge both rode sacrificial rides to aid Australia’s Allan Davis to gold in the men’s road race on Sunday.

In oppressive heat that reached 41c it was first Meyer who was tasked with bridging the early breakaway of six riders that eventually disintegrated to the pair of Northern Ireland’s David McCann and New Zealand’s Gordon McCauley.

Riding extended periods at the front of the peloton, Meyer ensured his Australian teammates had energy to attack in the second half of the race before withdrawing.

Durbridge then took up where Meyer had left off, chasing down a break from the front of the peloton before following Meyer to the team pit.

Once the peloton had been confined Australia’s pair of Allan Davis and Chris Sutton was able to bridge away from pre-race favourite and Tour de France star Mark Cavendish – who had been left to graft for himself following his Isle of Man teammates falling out of contention – and push for the line.

Sutton lead out in the final kilometre allowing Davis’ superior sprint pedigree to clinch gold ahead of Kiwi Hayden Roulston and World Road Championship time trial silver medallist David Millar of Scotland.
