WAIS athlete Nigel Barley has captured two nationals titles at last weekend’s Para-cycling Road National Championships in Echuca, Victoria.

Barley claimed victories in both the hand cycling (H2) time trial and road race events, proving he’d lost none of the form that saw him became the first Australian hand cyclist to medal at Paralympic level, when he secured silver in the time trial at last year’s London Games.

He was peerless in both events, taking the time trial win a full six minutes ahead of his nearest competitor, whilst averaging just a shade under 37km/hr over the course.

Barley was again unstoppable in the road race, crossing the line in 1:48.24 for his second national title of the championships.

Barley was a finalist for last year’s WAIS Elite Athlete with a Disability, whilst also receiving the Wheelchair Sports WA Athlete of the Year Award, alongside fellow WA Paralympian and WAIS athlete Shaun Norris.
