Fever Show Promise Ahead of 2018 Suncorp Super Netball Season

The West Coast Fever have competed in their first two pre-season games, ahead of the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball competition, taking on Magpies Netball at the State Netball Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Game one saw the side take away valuable experience after going down by 11 goals at the final whistle.

Head Coach, Stacey Marinkovich said “we took a lot from today.”

“We went into this game to test what we have been doing for the last five or six weeks and the things we wanted to see the girls deliver.”

“It’s about being fearless and having a really good crack at those things, and I could see what they were doing.”

“We’ve had some rotation of players with some coming back form surgeries in the off season, so to see our young up and coming was extremely exciting.”

With four squad members absent in Jhaniele Fowler, Jessica Anstiss, Shannon Eagland and Verity Charles, the Fever took the opportunity to give their training partners and some of the Fever Academy members a taste of what it is like to play in the National league.

Game two saw the West Coast side step it up to another level, improving even further on their game from the day before. 

Identifying and working on areas of greater weakness from Tuesday’s match proved invaluable as the Fever ran away with a seven goal victory over the Magpies.

Jessica Anstiss returned to the squad for Wednesday’s game, after illness, taking to the court in all three centre court positions.

Marinkovich said “still using our combinations and depth of our squad was really promising and rewarding for the hard work the girls have been doing.”

“The thing that was good was that we got some goals ahead, then they pushed back and even though they kept coming, we were able to put our foot down and it didn’t matter who was out there.”

“Everyone played their role and I think that’s the biggest part for us, and when everyone does that the game plan starts to build.”

Finishing the year on a high, with a win over Magpies Netball, the West Coast Fever will complete their last training session, before a well-earned break over Christmas later this week.

They will then return to the court in early January to continue their preparations for the second season of Suncorp Super Netball.
