Fever Suffer Home Defeat Against Thunderbirds

The West Coast Fever suffered a 41-61 defeat at the hands of the Adelaide Thunderbirds in round nine of the ANZ Championship at Perth’s Challenge Stadium.

The Fever trialed at each quarter and couldn’t match the intensity around the court from an Adelaide outfit that is considered a championship prospect in 2009.

WAIS athletes Caitlin Bassett, Shae Bolton, Madison Browne, Susan Fuhrmann, Andrea Gilmore and Josie Janz all featured for the Fever, with Bassett again in sharp form in the shooters circle, hitting 25 goals at 81% accuracy.

Adelaide based WAIS scholarship holder Kate Beveridge faced her WA compatriots for the first time in 2009, finishing with 29 goals at 79% accuracy, in what proved an entertaining shoot-out.

Despite being on a strong run of form, Thunderbirds captain Natalie von Bertouch was surprised by the end margin.

“We didn’t expect to win by 20,” von Bertouch said. “But our team focus was to stay in play in this game, and we did that more tonight,” von Bertouch told the official ANZ Championship website.

The West Coast Fever will now turn its attention to the round ten clash at home to the Southern Steel at Challenge Stadium.
