A formidable line up of Australian track cycling talent that includes five WAIS athletes will take on a host of international stars later this month for the Melbourne round of the 2010-2011 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics from Thursday 2 to Saturday 4 December.

World Champions Cameron Meyer, Josie Tomic and Sarah Kent will be joined by Commonwealth Games dual gold medallist Scott Sunderland and new comer Mel Hoskins in representing WA against a quality field that will include a full strength Great Britain outfit.

The Cyclones achieved barnstorming results at the 2010 UCI Track World Championships and the Delhi Commonwealth Games. They topped the medal table with six gold, two silver and two bronze medals from 19 events at the World Championships in March and demolished the competition on the velodrome in Delhi claiming twelve gold medals.

The Cylones and the team Jayco-AIS teams are now keen to continue their blistering form on home soil in a bid to claim early points towards Olympic Games qualification.

Anna Meares, the 2004 Olympic and reigning World Champion in the 500m time trial, will don her rainbow jersey in Melbourne for her pet event but will also contest the individual sprint and the keirin, both events she has her sights set on contesting in London in 2012.

Reigning World Champion in the points race, Madison and teams pursuit, Cameron Meyer (WAIS-AIS), will lead the charge in the endurance events teaming up with fellow World Champion Leigh Howard in the Madison and playing a vital role in the teams pursuit quartet.

The home nation’s major challenge will come from Great Britain. Several of their name riders opted to miss the Commonwealth Games in favour of preparing for the recent European Championships but the Melbourne World Cup round will be a true battle for the Ashes as each nation vies for bragging rights over their arch rivals. The announcement of the British and other international riders will be made over the coming week.

Cycling Australia is pleased to announce the riders selected in the Australian National Team and Team Jayco-AIS to contest the Melbourne round of the UCI Track World Cup Classics being staged at the Hisense Arena from Thursday 2 December to Saturday 4 December.
