Susan Fuhrman is New Delhi bound

West Coast Fever star defender Susan Fuhrmann has continued her rapid rise through the netball ranks and was today named in the Australian Diamonds squad to travel to Delhi for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

For Fuhrmann, a local West Australian country girl, it’s a dream come true as the Diamonds look to reclaim the gold medal won by the New Zealand Silver Ferns in 2006. Fuhrmann – a Western Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder – was part of that losing side, and will be looking to go one better this time around.

Fuhrmann impressed in her time on-court in the Holden Test Series against the Jamaican Sunshine Girls and recently the Silver Ferns, after sharing the goal keeper duties with Queensland Firebird Laura Geitz.

At 196cm, Fuhrmann was a stand-out player against the taller shooters from Jamaica and more impressively, against Irene van Dyk, who is long considered to be one the games most prolific goal scorers.

With 15 Test caps to her name, Fuhrmann joins the squad of 12 as the second most experienced defender, after surviving the final cut, in a side that will be led by Sharelle McMahon.

Missing the cut were Amy Steel, Madison Browne and West Australian Kate Beveridge.

Coach Norma Plummer is happy with the depth of her side.

“We’ve got some experienced internationals and some coming in with just a few caps. What pleases me most is the blend of the team and the way the players complement each other on the court.”

The squad with play two final matches against the Silver Ferns in coming weeks, before heading to Kuala Lumper for a pre-Games training camp and their departure for Delhi on September 27.
