A new name has been added to the list of Western Australian swimmers gunning for a place in London and it belongs to 15 year-old school girl Brianna Throssell.

Throssell – a WAIS scholarship holder – has departed for Lima, Peru where she will compete at the World Junior Swimming Championships where a daunting program of nine events awaits her. With both heats and finals the talented youngster could find herself diving into the pool for Australia as many as twenty times over the six days of competition.

The Year 10 Perth College student earned her selection on the Australian Junior Team off the back of a seven-medal haul at the National Age Swimming Championships held in Adelaide earlier this year under the guidance of coach Ian Mills at the City of Perth Swimming Club.

Throssell who trains alongside Australian Team Members Rhys Mainstone, Travis Nederpelt and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Blair Evans admitted having world-class athletes to train with on a daily basis has certainly helped in her preparation for this event.

“Those guys are so fast,” Thossell said before adding “they’re a good group to train with and that’s good for me I guess.”

Throssell, who this season graduated from Mills’ development squad to train under Matt Magee’s City of Perth open senior group was optimistic when asked about her busy schedule in Peru and what prospects it may hold. With nervous laughter Throssell likened her gruelling task to”probably just like one of our hard core training weeks-but actually fun”.

This will be the first international event for Throssell who expressed her desire to take away a positive experience from the opportunity with a view for future success.”…I’m as prepared as I could possibly be so I’m just going to do my best and learn as much as I can from the experience.”

Competition gets underway in Lima, Peru on Tuesday 16th August.
