#GC2018 Day Seven: Netball and Hockey Sides Continue Triumphant Ways
Today saw the commencement of the Commonwealth Games diving competition featuring two of our Western Australian athletes meanwhile the Australian netball and hockey teams triumphed once again.
DIVING
Day seven saw Maddison Keeney and Teju Williamson take to the diving pool to compete in their respective synchronised diving events.
Keeney was the first cab off the rank taking part in the Women’s Synchronised 3m Springboard event alongside diving partner Annabelle Smith.
The pairing put out a solid effort finishing in seventh place with 224.31 points.
Last minute Australian Diving Team replacement Teju Williamson contested the final of the Women’s Synchronised 10m Platform with Melissa Wu.
The pairing put out a textbook display however unfortunately missed out on a podium position by 0.36 points, finishing in fourth place with 307.80 points.
HOCKEY
The Australian men’s hockey side had a close fought battle against New Zealand this afternoon eventually coming away with a 2-1 win.
Scoring their first goal in the second quarter it wasn’t until the fourth that the scoring ramped up again.
A very back and fourth game, thanks to strong defensive play from both teams, ensured that the score stayed tight.
The last quarter saw both teams score their final goal for the match.
Australia’s two goal tally included a field goal from Western Australia’s own Trent Mitton.
NETBALL
Australia are slowly proving themselves as the netball team to beat at this year’s Commonwealth Games after finishing the preliminary round undefeated.
Tonight they took on Jamaica in their last match before the finals winning 72-51.
Western Australians Courtney Bruce and Caitlin Bassett were once again both named in the starting line up.
Bruce started the game in goal keeper where she was matched up against West Coast Fever team mate, Jhaniele Fowler.
The defender proved to be a real presence in the goal circle earning one defensive rebound, one intercept and three deflection in the first half before moving to the bench for the second.
Bassett also played the first half in goals shooter, once again achieving impressive stats scoring 22 from 23 goals at 96%.
The Diamonds now advance to the semi-finals where they will take on New Zealand on Saturday afternoon (AWST).
In tomorrow’s action you will be able to see Teju Williamson compete in the Women’s 10m platform diving event whilst there will also be a number of athletes competing at Carrara Stadium in the athletics.
