#GC2018 Day Six: Meyer and de Rozario Dominate on Day Six
As the swimming is wrapping up for the 2018 Commonwealth Games the athletics and road cycling is just beginning and our Western Australian’s competitors did not disappoint bringing home two gold medals on day six.
CYCLING – ROAD
After a busy two days in the velodrome earlier in the Games Cameron Meyer hopped back on his bike today, this time competing in the road cycling.
Taking to the bitumen to contest the Men’s Individual Time Trial the experienced cyclist powered home in a time of 48:13.04.
With a thirty second buffer on his nearest opponent Cameron showed his class easily claiming the gold medal.
PARA POWERLIFTING
Western Australia had two athletes competing in the Men’s Para Powerlifting at this year’s Games, Nang Nguyen and Ben Wright.
Nguyen took part in the lightweight competition where he made his first lift at 132kg before missing two attempts at 137kg.
The lightweight’s efforts earned him 142.3 points and an eighth place finish.
Ben Wright contested the heavyweight class successfully completing all three of his lifts.
Starting at 163kg Ben continued to increase the weight finishing with a 172kg lift on his third.
Wright finished in sixth place with 152.4 points.
HOCKEY
The Kookaburras had yet another win this afternoon defeating Canada 4-0 at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre.
Flying out of the gates early the men’s hockey side scored a quick three goals in the first quarter.
They then fell quiet on the scoring front before finding the net one more time in the fourth.
Australia’s defence proved too strong for the Canadians as they failed to add to their scoreboard tally.
SWIMMING
Holly Barratt was Western Australia’s final competitor in the Gold Coast 2018 swimming competition.
After qualifying for the final of the Women’s 50m Backstroke yesterday Barratt took to the pool tonight with her sights set firmly on the gold medal.
Unfortunately a podium finish was not to be as she touched in to the wall fourth, missing out on bronze by 0.06 seconds.
ATHLETICS
Day six saw the first of our Western Australian athletics athletes enter Carrara Stadium to compete.
Wheelchair racer Madison de Rozario was exceptional winning the gold medal in the Women’s T54 1500m event.
An experienced athlete on the world stage de Rozario crossed the line in 3:34.06, two seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
Western Australian hurdler Ian Dewhurst took to the track to contest the preliminary round of the Men’s 400m Hurdles.
Competing in heat three, Dewhurst crossed the line in third place narrowly missing out on a spot in Thursday’s final.
20-year-old Declan Carruthers was scheduled to take part in the Men’s Pole Vault preliminary round today however due to a devastating injury to his hamstring at his last training session he was unable to compete and was forced to withdraw from the Games.
As we draw nearer to the half way mark of the Commonwealth Games their are still many events which are yet to begin.
Tomorrow will see the start of the diving competition with Western Australian’s Maddison Keeney and Teju Williamson competing in the Women’s Synchronised 3m Springboard and the Women’s Synchronised 10m Platform respectively.
