WA diver Maddison Keeney has missed out on a medal in the women’s 3m springboard final at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh finishing in fourth position.

Keeney started the competition well, executing her opening two dives to comfortably sit in medal calculations heading into her third dive.

Keeney’s inward 2 ¬Ω somersault proved her undoing however, after she made contact with the board, leading to deductions from the judges and a score of 40.50 which dropped her from medal contention down to 11thposition.

Having misjudged her take-off position ever so slightly, Keeney shaved the edge of the board on her pike rotation, leading to a modest score.

In full credit to Keeney’s resoluteness, she managed to finish the competition well with, scores of 68.20 and 69.00 for her forward 3 ¬Ω somersault and forward 2 ¬Ω somersault with a twist to take fourth place with an overall score of 308.20.

In a great result for Australia, Keeney’s teammate Esther Qin won gold, posting 347.25 from her five dives.

Glasgow will undoubtedly be a huge learning curve Keeney, with her 1m and 3m springboard finals both influenced by errors that ultimately undermined her final position.

In yesterday’s 1m springboard final, Keeney baulked on an approach, to drop points and miss out on gold that she appeared set to win, (she would go on to achieve silver) whilst today’s points deduction equated to a margin that would have likely seen her earn a second silver medal.

Keeney does leave with two medals from her debut Games however, having won a bronze medal in the 3m synchro earlier in the program, competing with Annabelle Smith – who finished eighth in today’s final.
