Trent Mitton celebrates a goal in the match against South Africa

Two goals to WAIS athlete Trent Mitton has helped the Kookaburras to an impressive 6-0 win over South Africa in their Commonwealth Games pool match at the Glasgow International Hockey Centre.

Mitton converted two field goals to give Australia an early advantage against their Southern Hemisphere rivals, with Chris Ciriello adding a third to send the world and Commonwealth champions into the break 3-0 up.

The match was played predominantly in South Africa’s defensive end, with the Kookaburras’ array of attacking options creating plenty of headaches for their opponents.

The match took on a physical element as the South Africans attempted to match the intensity brought by the Australians, but whilst they mirrored in effort, they lacked in quality, and the Kookaburras converted a further three chances in the second half to record a 6-0 and remain undefeated after two matches at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Kieran Govers scored twice, with the other strike, via a Simon Orchard field goal.

Two South Africans were struck in the head and required medical treatment throughout the game with both incidents occurring from Australian penalty corners. Luckily, both players were able to walk from the field for further attention.

Western Australia was represented by Mitton, Fergus Kavanagh, Aran Zalewski and Kiel Brown, with their next match against India. The match is held on Day 6 (July 29), at 9.00pm Perth time.
