Australia has progressed to the semi finals of the men’s Commonwealth Games hockey tournament with its one hundred percent record in tact after putting hosts Scotland to the sword with a 5-0 victory at the Glasgow International Hockey Centre.

Individual goals to Jacob Whetton, Kieran Govers and Chris Ciriello as well as a double to Matt Gohdes set up a comfortable victory for the Kookaburras as they moved through to the semi finals in their attempt to defend their Commonwealth title.

Scotland attempted to defend with 11 men behind the ball, but it proved futile against a world championship outfit that maintained patience before systematically putting five goals past the home nation.

Chris Ciriello opened the scoring through a penalty corner, helping Australia to a 3-0 lead at half time, before a measured second half saw Australia add two further goals to round out a regulation 5-0 win.

WAIS athletes Trent Mitton, Fergus Kavanagh, Aran Zalewski and Kiel Brown played for the Kookaburras, who now face England in a knockout semi-final clash on Saturday.

Should the Kookaburras win, a likely gold medal clash with New Zealand awaits on the final day of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
