#Glasgow2014: Kookaburras Win Fifth Games Gold

The Kookaburras were in control throughout

The Kookaburras have claimed a fifth Commonwealth Games title with a 4-0 win over India at the Glasgow International Hockey Centre.

The Australians went into the final as overwhelming favourites, with form and history both firmly on its side.

The Kookaburras in June won a world cup title, whilst just days ago, they handed India a 4-2 defeat in the pool round. Perhaps most ominously of all, it was India, that the Kookaburras defeated 8-0 in the gold medal match at the 2010 Delhi Games.

Despite a plucky start from the Indians, Australia held control of the match from the get-go, and when Chris Ciriello scored the first of three penalty corner goals midway through the first half, the outcome had an air of predictability about it.

Ciriello also scored a hattrick in the Kookaburras’ 6-1 defeat of the Netherlands in the World Cup final, reinforcing his reputation as a man for the big occasion, as well as what was already beyond repute, that he is one of the world’s elite drag flick exponents,

Eddie Ockenden scored the Australians only field goal, but in driving rain, the Kookaburras appeared content to control possession and tempo and ease their way to a fifth Commonwealth Games title.

Western Australians Fergus Kavanagh, Trent Mitton, Aran Zalewski and Kiel Brown all featured for the Kookaburras and added to fellow WA athletes Jayde Taylor and Ashleigh Nelson as gold medallists from the West.

England defeated New Zealand 4-2 in a penalty shootout for the bronze medal after a 3-3 draw in regulation time.
