Lauren Mitchell has won a seventh Commonwealth medal of a glittering career with silver in the women’s floor final at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow.

Mitchell finished second behind 16 year-old English sensation Claudia Fragapane who emulated Mitchell’s Delhi heroics by winning four gold in Glasgow, on debut.

Mitchell – a 2010 world champion on floor – produced a stunning routine, including her signature triple woolf turn, to return a score of 13.833 which was good enough for silver behind Fragapane’s 14.541. Canada’s Elsabeth Black won bronze with 13.666.

The silver medal was Mitchell’s second of the campaign, following silver in the team final, and was the seventh of her illustrious career, following four gold and silver – again on beam – at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

The medal haul sees Mitchell sit one behind Western Australia’s most successful Commonwealth competitor of all time in Allana Slater – who won eight medals.

Earlier in the night, Mitchell finished sixth in the final on beam, with a fall early in her routine costing her a chance of a medal. The Australian camp did lodge a score enquiry on the judge’s score, but it was rejected, keeping her score at 13.000.

Beam gold went to Canada’s Black (14.900), with Mitchell’s Australian teammate Mary Anne Monkton (13.666) taking silver ahead of Wales’ Georgina Hockenhaul (13.466).
