Glasgow’s torrential rain has played havoc with the final of the women’s pole vault, with six of the 10 competitors exiting competition without registering a height.

Unfortunately within that six were Western Australian athletes Liz and Vicky Parnov who couldn’t come to terms with the conditions in the final and couldn’t pass heights to get themselves on the board.

Former WA athlete Alana Boyd, who is now back in her home state Queensland, handled the conditions expertly, and showed her skills to win consecutive Commonwealth crowns, clearing 4.50m for gold.

Vicky Parnov had three unsuccessful attempts at 3.80m to exit competition, whilst her younger sibling Liz had one miss at 4.00m, before passing to 4.15m where a further two attempts didn’t hit the mark.

Boyd cleared 4.15m and the third attempt, before a first up clearance at 4.35m, 4.40m and then again at 4.50m/ She tried for a new Commonwealth record, but missed three attempts at 4.63m.

Silver was won by Wales’ Peake (4.25m), whilst bronze was shared by Canada’s Newman and England’s Scott on 3.80m.

Australia’s women’s 4x400m relay team finished fourth in 3:30.27 in their final, with WA’s Lyndsay Pekin not selected to run, despite starring in the fourth leg in qualifying.
