#Glasgow2014 Preview: Gymnastics – Rhythmic

The Rhythmic gymnastics will be contested within the Hydro complex

The Glasgow organising committee has gone against conventional planning methods to put the Rhythmic Gymnastics in the first week of the competition schedule, handing the sport the first opportunity to shine in Glasgow.

Despite the scheduling shift, rhythmic gymnastics has never struggled to capture attention in the past. With four apparatus in the Commonwealth roster (Hoop, Ball, Clubs and Ribbon) – rhythmic gymnastics meets grace and choreography with strength and execution, in a thrilling spectator sport that defies the usual conventions of athlete performance.

Western Australia will have a home-grown talent to cheer on, with WAIS athlete Amy Quinn marking her Commonwealth Games debut as part of Australia’s rhythmic team. Quinn rose to prominence at this year’s national championships and selection trials, when she earned second rank behind Australian teammate Danielle Prince to earn selection.

Traditionally, the rhythmic medals at the Commonwealth Games have been claimed by Australian or Canadian representatives, but England and Scotland head a group of challengers aiming to break that duopoly.

Quinn and her Australian rhythmic teammates will take to the competition floor on Thursday July 24, with the first rotation of countries from 7.00pm Perth time, followed by the second rotation of countries from 1.00am (Jul 25) Perth time. The nation with the highest aggregate score will be crowned Commonwealth champion.
