Western Australian swimmers have added two further medals to their collection overnight with Madeleine Scott claiming silver in the Para-sport 100m breaststroke SB9 and Tommaso D’Orsogna winning bronze in the men’s 100m freestyle at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Scott produced a personal best in winning silver behind Commonwealth champion Sarah Pascoe (1:19.36) of New Zealand, after hitting the wall in 1:21.38 in the Tollcross Centre pool.

Fellow West Australian Kat Downie also competed in the final, finishing sixth in a time of 1:24.04 which was also a personal best time, in a fine effort from the WA duo.

Having moved to Canberra to train with the Australia Para program, Scott said the result was testament to her training program in the Nation’s capital.

“I’ve worked really hard on my strength since joining the Para program at the AIS and I’m just really happy to have been able to produce another PB here in Glasgow,” Scott said.

Tommaso D’Orsogna’s impressive Glasgow campaign continued on Day 4, with the reigning WA Swimmer of the Year picking up bronze in the final of the men’s 100m freestyle.

The race had been built up as the biggest of the meet, duo to the head to head rivalry of Australians James Magnussen and Cameron McEvoy. The final, didn’t disappoint.

The race was a classic, with McEvoy blitzing out of the blocks to establish a lead at the turn, with Magnussen third at the 50m, whilst D’Osogna appeared out of the race in seventh.

The second 50m however, turned the race on its head, with Magnussen charging home for victory in 48.11, overhauling McEvoy’s 48.34, with bronze going to D’Orsogna – who moved up four places to third in a time of 49.04.

The medal clean sweep was Australia’s first at Commonwealth level in the men’s 100m since Brisbane in 1982.

The fun isn’t over for D’Orsogna yet either, with the 23 year-old qualifying for tonight’s final in the men’s 100m fly, set to be contested at 4.20am Perth time (29 July).

D’Orsogna will race from lane 2, and will be joined in the evening’s final program by fellow West Australian Sally Hunter, who has qualified through to the final of women’s 100m breaststroke, competing from lane 6 at 3.26am (July 29).
