Hindley Earns World Tour Podium Finish at Tour of Poland

Western Australian road cyclist Jai Hindley has recorded the best result of his fledgling pro-team racing career to date, after securing second place in the general classification at the Tour of Poland.

Hindley was one four Australians riding in the five-strong Team Sunweb set up, with the youngster joined by fellow Western Australians Rob Power and Michael Storer.

Raced over seven stages, Hindley put in a fine effort to finish a mere two seconds behind eventual tour champion Pavel Sivakov of Team Ineos.

It is the 23-year-old’s first ever world tour level podium finish, and he credited his teammates for helping protect him on the closing stage, after he’d spent a lot of energy on the penultimate stage hanging in towards the front of the general classification fold.

“I really owe all the boys after today.

“They looked after me perfectly and kept me safe throughout the stage. In general, I was pretty cooked after yesterday but did my best to follow the big favourites.

“Then in the final, Storer did a mega job of controlling the front and riding good tempo whilst Chris (Hamilton) and I waited for the final attacks. In the end I couldn’t make up any time on GC and finished safe in the bunch kick finish.”

Team Sunweb coach Marc Reef added: It was a hard day again, with some quite difficult climbs during the stage.

“The boys did a really strong job today with yesterday’s hard stage in the legs; keeping Jai and Chris out of problems and in position.

“Coming into the finale we had three guys (also Michael) in a group of around 25 and focussed on the last climb to the line. We weren’t able to move up on GC but in the end we can be really proud of finishing on the podium, with Jai in second place.”
