WAIS rowing athletes Todd Skipworth, Perry Ward, Ross Brown and Tom Nicholls yesterday combined to help Western Australia win a third straight Penrith Cup in the men’s lightweight four at the 2009 Interstate Regatta.

Following on from the recent Australian Rowing Championships which were also hosted at Lake Barrington in Tasmania, the four WAIS athletes produced a stunning race, finishing ahead of Queensland and Tasmania in a time of 6:12.81min.

Victoria claimed the Queen’s Cup which is awarded to the winners of the women’s eight. The Western Australian boat finished third behind the Victorians (6:17.24min) and Queensland with Mann, O’Mahony, Del La Hunty, Miles, Hagan, Bagworth, Baker, Rose and Ellis (cox) all representing the state.

The King’s Cup for the men’s eight proved a race for second after New South Wales cruised to victory in 5:30.80min. Victoria crossed second ahead of the West Australian team of Skipworth, Brown, Brewer, Kelly, Fletcher, Stevenson, Gatti, Grant and McCombe (cox).

WAIS athletes also helped Western Australia to silver medals in the men’s (Wilkinson Cup) and women’s (Bicentenary Cup) youth eight events.
