WAIS athletes helped farewell Perth’s Perry Lakes over the weekend with the Western Australian Championships signifying the end of an era before the stadiums demolition.

Whilst a big bang was imminent for the venue, it was WAIS javelin thrower Kim Mickle that landed the biggest impact. Mickle continued her career best form with an A-Qualifier standard and new personal best throw of 63.49m. She then backed up again with another throw reaching 63.13m, consolidating her favouritism for this week’s national championships in Brisbane.

Mickle has the honour of being the final athlete to break a WA State record at the venue.

WAIS scholarship holder Jody Henry enjoyed a productive competition winning gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m events, with the 23 year-old having only recently taken up the 400m.

WAIS’ Ellen Pettitt claimed victory in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.85m. Pettitt finished ahead of fellow WAIS scholarship holder Zoe Timmers (1.80m) and Brittany Pettitt (1.75m).

The men’s pole vault competition had an Olympic feel to it with Athens gold medallist Tim Mack of the US going up against WAIS triple Olympian Paul Burgess. Burgess took the honours with a clearance at 5.40m, which defeated Mack on count back. WAIS athlete Michael Leask jumped a personal best of 5.00m to take third.

The women’s pole vault had a strong WAIS feel to it with the top three athletes on WAIS scholarship. Amanda Bisk claimed gold with a clearance of 4.10m, ahead of Vicky Parnov (4.00m) and younger sister Liz Parnov (3.80m). Earlier in the meet, the Parnov sisters claimed victories in their respective age groups in kinder wind conditions. Vicky Parnov claimed the women’s U20 competition with a best clearance of 4.20m, whilst Liz Parnov won the women’s U16 competition with a strong leap of 4.10m.

WAIS scholarship holder Kyle Rasti had a busy schedule, taking wins in the 110m hurdles and long jump, and a second place finish in the high jump.

WAIS’ Larrisa Perry claimed wins in both the women’s triple jump and long jump. Perry recorded jumps of 12.07m and 5.76m respectively.

WAIS athlete Felipe De Castro Cruz won the men’s 400m in a personal best time of 48.11sec and backed up for silver in the men’s 400m hurdles in a time of 51.98sec.
