Kim Mickle Selected for #Rio2016

Published On: 4 April 2016

2013 IAAF World Championship silver medallist Kim Mickle has been officially selected to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games for Australia.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) last night ratified a further 28 athletes, nominated by Athletics Australia (AA) at the culmination of the 2016 Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney, bringing to 35 athletes in total, to have now been formally selected for this year’s Games.

Kim Mickle underwent shoulder reconstruction surgery in September last year, following aggravation of an existing injury at the 2015 IAAF Athletics World Championships in Beijing.

Rehabilitation has meant the 30 year-old has not competed across the 2016 domestic season and the reigning Commonwealth champion did not compete at last week’s national championships.

Mickle was selected having previously achieved the qualifying A-Standard of 61.00m required for nomination and with the ten-time national champion boasting a personal best of 66.63m Athletics Australia used its discretionary selection process to nominate the javelin thrower for a second Olympic campaign.

In 2012, Kim Mickle debuted at the London Olympic Games, missing qualification for the women’s final. In the years since, she’s won a world championship medal, a Commonwealth title and solidified a world ranking inside the top five.

Mickle’s selection sees her as the fourth Western Australian formally confirmed on the Australian Olympic Team for Rio.

The track and field events at Rio will be contested across days 7-15 in the Olympic Stadium, with 47 medal events in action.

Future nominations to the Australian Olympic Committee in track and field are anticipated on:-

25 April: Marathon

30 May: 20km Walk & 10,000m

12 July: Final Selection Meeting (all other events)
