Lightning Strike to Take Down Fever

The West Coast Fever have come away from Round 12 of the Suncorp Super Netball having gone down in a hard fought battle against the Sunshine Coast Lightning, on the Sunshine Coast last Friday.

Despite their strong start, pulling away to an early six goals to one lead, the Fever were unable to maintain their control allowing their opposition back into the game to finish the first quarter level.

The second quarter of the match proved to be damaging for the Western Australian side as they were outscored 18 to 11, giving the Sunshine Coast a strong lead at the half time break.

Heading into the second half the West Coast Fever struggled to maintain possession, faced with a number of early turnovers in their attacking end. 

As the third term progressed the visitors held strong, halting the Sunshine Coast’s charge keeping the score to an eight goal margin at the final break.

The final quarter saw West Coast Fever training partner, Jessica Eales make her National League debut.

Although the change caused a temporary halt in momentum for the Lightning, they were soon able to reassert their authority taking the game with a 14 goal victory. 

West Coast Fever defender Courtney Bruce said “we made a really positive start to the game but lacked accountability for our performance when it counted.”

“As a group we acknowledge that the gap between our best and worst netball is too large at present and it is something we must continue to improve.”

“Ultimately we know we are capable of matching it with any team in this competition and we have to translate that confidence into execution.”

The Fever now return to Perth for their final two matches of the season where Round 13 will see them take on the Magpies in front of a 7000 strong home crowd.

The game will take place this Saturday at 6:45pm at the Perth Arena.
