Luke Durbridge wins bronze at 2022 UCI Road World Championships

WAIS cycling graduate Luke Durbridge has claimed bronze in the team time trial mixed relay at the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong.

Durbridge who was the under 23 time trial world champion in 2011 and is a four-time team time trial world championship medallist was part of a powerhouse Australian Cycling Team competing on home roads.

He combined with Lucas Plapp and Michael Matthews to get Australia off to a strong start, completing the men’s leg in the provisional fastest time.

Alexandra Manly, Sarah Roy Georgia Baker then brought Australia home in 34:25.57 to take the provisional lead by over four minutes with an average speed of 49.149km/h.

Switzerland and Italy came home strong pushing Australia to bronze.

“I think the mixed relay is a really good way to start the championships for us. Having some success is great in Australia. The crowds were fantastic today and we’re really happy to come away with the bronze medal,” Durbridge said.

“It’s our first time we’ve done this event and I think it has quite a big future. We were happy with our performance today.”
