Mainstone Fifth in Hawaiian Splash

WAIS open water swimmer Rhys Mainstone has finished fifth in the Waikiki Rough Water Swim event held in Honolulu, Hawaii last Monday.

In choppy waters, and in a field of over 850 competitors, Mainstone was able to break away fast to establish himself in the lead group of the 3.84km event.

Despite being traditionally suited to the longer form of ocean racing, Mainstone was able to maintain a fast intensity to finish towards the front of the field, which included a strong Australian mix.

The 42nd edition of the popular race was won by Mainstone’s compatriot George O’Brien, whilst brothers Codie and Trent Grimsey also of Australia rounded out the medals.

Mainstone’s time of 43:56mins easily topped his age category in the 19-24 division for the race that is competed on the Monday Labour Day holiday each year, dating back to the 1970’s.

The event has been a popular one with WAIS athletes in recent times, with dual Olympian Travis Nederpelt winning the 2010 edition of the race.
