WAIS open water swimmer Rhys Mainstone has reclaimed his Australian Open Water title in the 10km distance after a thrilling event at the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships in Perth.

Mainstone overcame a shaky start to finish best of the Australian contingent in a time of 1:54.26.27 ahead of Jarrod Poort and WA’s Simon Huitenga at Armadale’s Champion Lakes course.

Canadian Richard Weinberger was the event’s overall winner finishing just under a minute faster, however Mainstone said he was happy to have reclaimed his Australian title after finishing runner up by less than a second at last year’s event.

Fellow WAIS athlete Brooke Wilson returned a top ten finish in the women’s 10km event, finishing behind national champion and London Olympic bound swimmer Melissa Gorman.

Wilson however, won her age group, taking out the girls 17-18 category with her time of 2:09.23.25.
