Tokyo bound Matt Richardson has successfully defended his national sprint crown at the 2021 Australian Track Championships at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane.

The 21-year-old posted a blistering time of 9.623secs in qualifying before easily dispatching John Trovas, Carlos Carismo in the next two rounds. Visiting Malaysian Muhummas Shar was the next to be eliminated by Richardson in the semifinal to set up a ride for gold.

In the best of three gold medal ride Richardson needed only two to beat Mohd Azizulhasni to defend his national title and cement himself as Australia’s rising sprint king.

“It’s good to go back-to-back. The legs were in there in the end for that final round against Awang. It’s awesome to race the Malaysians, they really bring something else to the track, and it’s good learning.”
