Matt Wearn mounts medal charge to move up to second after six races

World Championship medallist Matt Wearn has jumped up the rankings with three top five finishes on a busy day of racing.

The three races on Tuesday instead of the scheduled two to make up for a missed raced over the weekend due to weather, provided an opportunity for Wearn needed to make the most of the stronger winds.

Race four opened with a fourth place finish to jump Wearn inside the top 10 and reignite his medal charge. The Perth born sailor used the strong winds to his advantage netting second in the next two races and remind the fleet why he is considered one of the top sailors in the world.

With four races to come Wearn now sits second on 27 points, six ahead of third and just nine behind leader Pavlos Kontides.

“It was good to get a bit of momentum and to feel like I’m starting to race like I know I can,” Wearn said. “I came in feeling a bit frustrated with my previous races, so it was good to get that monkey off my back.”

“It was difficult out there, but to walk away in second is good. It’s confidence-building.”

Wearn has a rest day on Wednesday, before returning to the water on Thursday for races 7 and 8.
