Meyer Fifth in Madison Campaign

Two-time Madison world champion Cameron Meyer and reigning national champion Callum Scotson executed a smart and tactical Madison, finishing two points off the podium in a race that went down to the final sprint.

The pairing, who had never raced together before, elected to sit out chasing points in the early sprints to focus all their energy on lapping the field.

Taking advantage of a lull in the pace following the sixth sprint the pair launched a blistering attack from the bunch immediately gaining an advantage.

Despite a solid pace behind, Australia continued to close in on the bunch taking the seventh sprint and five points along the way as they continued with their effort to take a lap, now in combination with the Spanish team.

With a lap in their pocket, Meyer, a long-term WAIS scholarship athlete and Scotson, switched their focus to their points tally. A second in sprint number eight put them in the bronze medal position on eight points, just three from gold.

A late lap by the team from Great Britain who had hoovered up the highest number of points altered the dynamic of the race.

Heading in to the final sprint Australia were sitting in fifth position and the five points for a win could have jumped Australia up to silver.

With Belgium off the front with two laps to go, Meyer launched a final attack in an effort to take maximum points and a medal, but Australia was just short of catching Belgium, and was pipped on the line by Spain leaving them in fifth position.
