WAIS scholarship holder Cam Meyer has made a strong start in his first Giro d’Italia with team Garmin-Slipstream, helping two members of the squad into top ten positions in the general classification after two stages.

Meyer who won a world championship gold medal in the points race recently made an impressive start in the teams time trial on day one of the tour, where Garmin-Slipstream claimed second place, just six seconds behind Team Columbia.

Meyer at 21 years of age is one of the youngest riders in the tour, and has been given the task of supporting team mate and high profile cyclist Christian Vande Velde. Meyer again showed his adaptability to push towards the front to position both Vande Velde and US sprinter Tyler Farrar for line honours.

Farrar was able to hit the line in the front group and crossed in fifth place in the bunch sprint to sit sixth in the general classification. Vande Velde is well placed in eighth position heading into stage three.

Rising British star Mark Cavendish holds the tour pink leaders jersey ahead of two Australians, Columbia team mates Mark Renshaw and Michael Rogers. Team Astana’s prized recruit and seven times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong is currently tenth overall.

Monday’s third stage is a 198 km ride from Grado to Valdobbiadene, before the racers contemplate the approach to the mountain stages.
