WAIS cyclist Cameron Meyer has been named in the elite men’s squad for the 2013 UCI Road World Championships in Florence, Italy from 21-29 September.

The pro-cyclist who made his Tour de France debut earlier this year was selected for the elite men’s road race as part of a nine member Australian squad that will tackle a 272.26km course from Lucca to Firenze Mandela Forum on Sunday 29.

Meyer will be joined in Australian colours by U23 WAIS cyclist Brad Lindfield, with the Bunbury resident selected for the men’s U23 road race on Friday 27.

Dual 2013 national road champion Luke Durbridge was omitted from the extended elite men’s squad, whilst in the elite women’s ranks, Mel Hoskins missed out on a spot in the women’s road race after the technical course layout was deemed unsuited to her flat sprint pedigree.

The Australian squad contains a wealth of talent, with Meyer joined by names such as Cadel Evans, Richie Porte and Shara Gillow to name just a few.

The squad’s strength has given reason to Cycling Australia’s High Performance Director, Kevin Tabotta to predict that Australia will again be challenging for podium positions across the categories.

“Australia always go into the Worlds with the expectation that our athletes will challenge for podium positions. Despite recent high profile omissions through injury, this group is capable of delivering across the categories.” He said.
