Meyer Takes Third Place at An Post Ras

Cameron Meyer has taken third place in the An Post Ras in Ireland riding with the Australian U23 road squad.

The podium finish for the track world champion rounded out a successful eight stage competition for the Australian group, with Meyer’s WA teammate Michael Storer winning an earlier stage and squad member Samuel Jenner taking second place in the closing stage.

The theme of the week has been the team’s willingness to ride in support of one another, a point articulated by Jenner at competition close.

“I’m very happy with the second place today after coming here hungry for a result. But wish I could have pulled off the win after having Michael Storer laying it all on the line for me,” Jenner said.

“The plan for today was to give all we had and try move Cam up on GC. It started with Welsford putting the bunch under strain then Storer delivering the blow to crack the bunch on the first categorised climb.

“Everything went to plan having three off the front until I dropped my chain at the top and then Storer puncturing 20km later after he and Cam had developed a one minute advantage over the chasing bunch.

“Once the group came back together DS James Victor gave us the opportunity to launch an attack and go for the stage win.”

With a stage win, three podiums and third overall, Jenner was pleased with the team’s results and the experience brought to the team with the inclusion of Cam Meyer.

“It was a massive effort by all the staff/riders this week and I think if we had a bit better luck things could have been different. Huge thanks to Cam Meyer who brought his experience and shared his knowledge.

“The team has had some unreal results this year and it feels great to be part of the success.”

Likewise, Cycling Australia’s National U23 Men’s Road Coach James Victor was pleased with another impressive race by the team.

“A good week in general for the team. Always interesting racing with our team chased down from day one. Such is the team’s reputation, particularly Cameron being here.

“Tactically some good lessons for the future as a targeted team. Cameron’s leadership continued on from his impressive Australian summer with the young guys, and integrating with young track and road riders was again instrumental in a cohesive effort all week.

“Sam Welsford learned a lot this week and surprised himself getting through a solid eight days while Sam Jenner and Michael both achieved podiums and showed their fighting spirit right to the end with a great last stage podium,” Victor added.

“This week was important for their continued development and understanding of a week-long stage race.

“So in all a balanced effort, always playing a role in the aggressive fast style of racing here and already a welcome invitation to return next year to the RAS!”
