Meyer Third in Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race

WA cyclist Cameron Meyer came within inches of snatching victory at the Cadel Evans Road Race on Saturday after a daring attack.

The six-time track world champion launched a solo surge inside the final 800m of the UCI WorldTour event and looked to have victory in the bag, until he was caught and passed in the final throes – with the race win going to German sprinter Nikias Arndt (SUN) ahead of Simon Gerrans (ORS).

Meyer – riding for the Australian National Road Team – held on for third as he continues a successful return to road cycling ranks.

Meyer found the lead-pack napping after Richie Porte’s attempts to seize an escape had been thwarted, immediately establishing his own break which took him clear into the closing straight before being caught at the line.

Meyer’s teammates and fellow West Australian cyclists Jai Hindley (16th) and Michael Storer (18th) also produced good rides in an event that boasted Tour de France champion Chris Froome amongst a field of world class talent.
