Mickle Through to Final in Daegu

WAIS athlete Kim Mickle has qualified for the women’s javelin final at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, after throwing 60.50m earlier today.

The six time national champion, and Commonwealth Games silver medallist recorded qualification with her first of three throws and earned eighth ranking in progressing through to the medal round.

Mickle launched the javelin 60.50m first up, and followed with efforts of 57.80m and 60.12 to book her place in Friday’s final.

The final is set for some big throws with German Christina Obergfoll heaving 68.68.76m to top the qualifying ahead of South Africa’s Sunette Viljoen (65.34m) and another German Katherina Molitor (63.52m).

12 athletes head into the final with three throws, before that list is reduced to the top eight, who receive a further three throws.

World Record holder Barbora Spotakova has also qualified for the final with a distance of 63.40m, well below her leading mark of 72.28m. The World Championship competition record sits at 71.70m, set by Olisdeilys Menedez (CUB) in 2005.

There was disappointment for the men’s 4x400m relay squad however, after the team featuring WAIS athlete Ben Offereins finished fifth in their heat and tenth overall, with only eight countries advancing to the final.

The Australian team of Offereins, Tristan Thomas, Sean Wroe and Steve Solomon came home in a time of 3:01.56, a season best, but not enough to sneak through.
