Eight time national javelin champion Kim Mickle will this weekend make her 2013 IAAF Diamond League debut, when she competes at the New York showpiece event.

Having qualified for this year’s world championships in Russia, WAIS athlete Mickle has begun the process of gaining competition preparation, and will also appear in a Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon during a whirlwind 11 day visit to the US.

Mickle – who made her Olympic debut at last year’s Games in London – registered an A-Qualifying throw for selection at August’s World Championships at a Track Classic meet in Sydney earlier this year, before confirming her status as one of Australian field athletics all time greats, by winning an eighth national title at the Australian Athletics Championships, that were also held in Sydney.

Mickle will have little time to acclimatise ahead of her Diamond League debut for the year, with the 28 year-old departing Perth on Thursday ahead of the New York event on May 25.

A silver medallist from the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, Mickle has set herself the target of medalling at this year’s world championships, and the Scarborough resident has also confirmed her intention to compete through to the next Olympic Games in Rio, where she hopes to add a further podium place.
